The Tarrytown, N.Y., company and colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation published animal results showing the synergistic action of ciliary neurotrophic factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in arresting motor neuron degeneration.
Administration of CNTF alone, and to a lesser extent BDNF alone, slows but doesn't arrest progression of motor neuron dysfunction in wobbler mice. These animals inherit a defect that causes forelimb muscle weakness at three to four weeks of age, progressing to paralysis. Neuronal degeneration and loss occurs in the spinal cord. ...
