Researchers presented results of the use of ProstaScint in determining which patients with recurrent prostate cancer should receive radiation therapy. As reported at the American Urologic Association meeting in Orlando, Fla., 17 men with recurrent disease were divided into three groups. Group 1 (n=9) had ProstaScint scans which showed recurrent tumor localized to the prostate; group 2 (n=5) had scans which indicated recurrent tumor in sites outside of the prostate; and group 3 (n=3) had scans which failed to show any site of recurrence.

In group 1, 6 of 9 patients had a complete response to radiotherapy; in group 2, no patients had a complete response; and in group 3, 2 of 3 patients had a complete response. Researchers concluded that ProstaScint may be useful to select patients who should receive local salvage radiotherapy because their disease is confined within the radiation field. ...
