SHMN announced that it has treated 20 patients with travelers' diarrhea in an open label Phase II trial. The trial included subjects who traveled to Mexico. In the trial, 80 percent of the treated patients returned to normal within 48 hours of treatment, and they experienced no recurrence during a 72-hour post-treatment follow-up. The normal course of untreated travelers' diarrhea is 5-7 days.
Patients received 2 g/day for 2 days (a 1,500 mg loading dose followed by 500 mg on the first day, and 500 mg four times a day the second day). The only minor side effect seen was some nausea. However, it's not clear if the nausea was due to the drug or the illness. ...
