VP 63843 small molecule inhibitor of RNA viruses data
Viropharma announced positive results of a Phase II study in enteroviral summer flu. Of 33 volunteers in the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 16 were orally administered 200 mg of VP 63843 twice daily for seven days. All participants were infected with a modified enterovirus, which causes a summer flu-like illness characterized by upper respiratory symptoms, fever and muscle aches. Treated patients received the compound the evening before they were infected.
In treated patients, symptoms were reduced to near background levels. Daily mucus weights of >10 g were collected from 63 percent of the placebo group versus none of the treated subjects.
