Stem cell companies gain on tissue-engineering news

Shares of stem cell companies gained on Friday after a Swedish hospital said it performed the first successful transplant of a trachea made from a synthetic scaffold seeded with the patient's own stem cells. Stocks gaining at least 5% included StemCells Inc. (NASDAQ:STEMD), which jumped $0.95 (19%) to $6.08; and Geron Corp. (NASDAQ:GERN), which was up $0.39 (10%) to $4.39. ...
