Study evaluates diabetes in statin patients

Researchers at the University of Glasgow and colleagues published in the Lancet a meta-analysis that showed statin use was associated with a 9% increase in the risk of developing diabetes. However, the researchers said the small absolute risk for developing diabetes is outweighed by cardiovascular benefit in individuals for whom statin therapy is recommended. The meta-analysis of 13 clinical trials in 91,140 non-diabetic subjects also showed the risk of developing diabetes with statins was highest in trials with older subjects, while neither baseline body mass index nor change in LDL cholesterol concentrations influenced risk. ...
