Daily chart: White House, CDC and FDA thinking on sequential COVID-19 serological tests

In a COVID-19 Testing Blueprint released April 27, the White House, CDC and FDA illustrated how the accuracy of serological testing for COVID-19 antibodies could be increased by using two tests sequentially, instead of relying on a single test. The figure shows the positive predictive value (PPV) -- the probability that a positive result is real -- for single and sequential tests with 95% sensitivity and 95% specificity, under different assumptions about the prevalence of COVID-19 exposure in the population (see “Sequential COVID-19 Antibody Testing Route to Minimizing False Positives”).
