Inhibiting PIEZO1 for nerve damage

Fruit fly and mouse studies suggest inhibiting PIEZO1 could help treat nerve damage. In two Drosophila models of sensory nerve injury and one Drosophila model of motor nerve injury, sensory neuron- or motor neuron-specific knockout of the fruit fly homolog of PIEZO1 increased axon regeneration compared with normal expression of the homolog. In a mouse model of corneal sensory nerve injury, sensory neuron-specific knockout of PIEZO1 increased nerve fiber regeneration.
