NIH unveils brain cell census network

NIH’s Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) launched the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network (BICCN) to catalog cell types in the human, monkey and mouse brain. NIH will provide $250 million total over five years through 11 grants for the network.

The goal is to create a reference brain cell atlas which characterizes molecular, anatomical and physiological properties of brain cells. The four components of BICCN include a brain cell data center, mouse brain cell census center and collaboratory, and a human and nonhuman primate brain cell census collaboratory.
