How U.S. universities are bridging the translational gap
An increasing number of academic institutions are filling the translational gap between what typical academic projects produce and what companies or VC firms want to see in order to commercialize a discovery. These organizations, or "translational centers," are dedicated to advancing life science research and other technologies through licensing or start-up formation (see Cover Story).
The centers fall into three broad categories: incubator hubs, accelerators, and programs (see Table: Translational centers).
Incubator hubs support new companies without providing direct grants, although often they provide assistance to help researchers access other sources of funding, such as VC or angel investments, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR)
