How to interpret Gilead's data for GS-7977 in HCV null responders

Disappointing Phase IIb data from Gilead Sciences Inc. in HCV genotype 1 null responders dispelled hopes that 12 weeks of GS-7977 plus ribavirin might be an interferon-free panacea for all HCV patients. While investors were quick to slash 14% off Gilead's valuation, doctors contacted by BioCentury said the null responder data should not have been too surprising given how difficult it is to treat this subgroup of patients.

Indeed, the data from the ELECTRON study lend support to the belief of many HCV experts that different combinations and durations of therapy will be needed for various HCV patient subgroups (see BioCentury, May 11, 2009). ...
