Germany's stem cell door open a crack

The German central public funding organization for academic research - Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - last week gave the green light to the first application for funding of a research project involving embryonic stem cells.

The DFG's action followed a 340-265 vote of the German parliament Deutscher Bundestag to allow the import of human embryonic stem cells for research purposes. Imports will be subjected to strict regulation and oversight (see BioCentury Jan. 28, 2002)...
