The economics of animal factories

Sometimes it seems that advances in technology lead back to the simplest of ideas. The ability to produce proteins has moved from E. coli to yeast to CHO cells and now it's going back to the farm, if Genzyme Transgenics Corp.'s technology works out.

The company uses in vitro microinjection to introduce a genetically engineered segment of DNA into an animal's fertilized egg or early-stage embryo. If successful, the animal will express the desired protein in its milk.
