Mapping mutations to networks

UCSF and UCSD launch CCMI to understand consequences of cancer-linked mutations

As the wave of large-scale 'omics' projects continues to grow, the next trend is ambitious mapping projects to make sense of all the data generated. The latest of these is the Cancer Cell Map Initiative, launched last month by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and University of California San Diego (UCSD) with the stated goal of determining "how all the components of a cancer cell interact."

The backers of this initiative include Fred Luddy, founder and chief product officer at enterprise cloud software company ServiceNow Inc., in addition to UCSF and UCSD. Funding amounts have not been disclosed, but project co-director Nevan Krogan told BioCentury CCMI has millions in support and hopes to reach the "several tens of millions range" in the future. ...
