Medco's Accredo Health Group Inc. specialty pharmacy subsidiary said the enhanced clinical oversight provided through its Hepatitis C Therapeutics Resource Center and its expertise in gene-based medicine have led to an almost 10% increase in adherence to HCV therapy compared with patients receiving treatment from other providers and have reduced the cost of therapy by an average of $13,000 per patient. Accredo said the center has been successful in using genotype information to identify patients who only need 24 weeks of treatment, which has contributed to the savings in drug costs. The HCV resource center provides services that include patient training on the use of medications, prevention of drug waste, coordination of care, genetic screening and patient monitoring and counseling to promote patient adherence to treatment, including assistance with the management of side effects. ...
