Genzyme said it would reduce headcount by 1,000 over the next 15 months. The company said the cuts comprise about 10% of its workforce after accounting for the divestment of its Genzyme Genetics unit to Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings (NYSE:LH, Burlington, N.C.). In May, Genzyme announced plans to reduce costs and pursue strategic alternatives for three of its businesses, including the genetics unit.
