LeukoSite received a $750,000 Phase II SBIR grant from the National Institutes of Health to humanize the MAb to alpha-4 beta-7, the homing receptor that lymphocytes use to bind to the MAdCAM-1 adhesion receptor. Lymphocytes use the receptor to enter gut tissue. Preclinical testing also will be conducted under the grant. Clinical testing of the humanized MAb is anticipated in 1997. Small molecule inhibitors identified in a Phase I grant also will be optimized using the Phase II grant, with an oral drug as the goal. ...
