HGSI said it has sequenced more than 99 percent of the genome of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium, the most frequent cause of nosocomial infections, and a cause of toxic shock syndrome and wound infections.
The genome contains about 2.8 million nucleotides, making it the largest complete genome sequence to date, HGSI said. About 1,400 genes specify proteins similar to those previously described in different strains of bacteria and other organisms, and more than 1,000 additional genes have been identified that are not closely related to known genes. ...
