University researchers published in Science the use of a senesence-specific promoter to control the gene coding the enzyme that is the rate-limiting step in making cytokinin, a plant hormone. Levels of the hormone fall in dying leaves.

Transgenic tobacco plants, expressing the enzyme gene, joined to the SAG12 senescence gene promoter from the weed Arabidopsis, had longer lifespan with prolonged capacity for photosynthesis, the researchers reported. ...
