Rhode Island announced the state's first two Research Centers of Excellence -the Rhode Island Center for Cellular Medicine and the Ocean Technology Center - which will share $750,000 in state funds.
The Rhode Island Center for Cellular Medicine will support the development of cell-based medical technology. The center, which includes CTII, Brown University Medical School, the Lifespan Hospitals, and three start-ups - BCR, MultiCell and Cell Kinetics - will receive a $500,000 grant. CTII, Brown and Lifespan will contribute an additional $300,000. BCR is developing bacterial chain reaction technology created at the university for diagnostic applications, beginning with cancer. MultiCell is developing artificial liver technology, while Cell Kinetics is a scientific equipment manufacturer interested in expanding into tissue engineering and gene therapy.
