Two articles published in Nature show how the ob gene and its product may fit into the interplay of hormones known to regulate feeding behavior.
In the first report, French researchers showed that the ob gene is expressed differently at different times of day and night, with highest expression during the night after rats start eating. Fasting prevented the cyclic variation, and decreased the amount of the protein's messenger RNA. Feeding the fasted rats restored ob mRNA to levels seen in fed animals. ...
