Primates accepted mismatched kidney transplants for periods ranging up to two years or more without the need for chronic immunosuppressive drugs, according to university collaborators of the Charlestown, Mass., company who reported at the Symposium on Tolerance in Boston.
The animals were treated with an antibody to remove mature immune cells, then a low dose of radiation was used to make space for donor bone marrow. The marrow was injected, the kidney transplanted, and a four-week course of immunosuppressants was given. ...
