HMSR (Marlborough, Mass.) presented its pathogen inactivation processes at the Blood Safety and Screening conference in Washington. The company uses formaldehyde and hydroxymethylamino acids as inactivation agents.

Using the T4 virus to assess inactivation efficacy, formaldehyde eliminated virtually all virus in red blood cell concentrates, washed red blood cells, and plasma, with a six log reduction in virus levels (99.9999 percent reduction).
