German researchers published an approach to construct hybrid genes that code for microbial antibiotics, and that are not synthesized by ribosomes. As reported in Science, an example of the approach was made with an antibiotic called surfactin, made by Bacillus subtilis and used in industrial applications.

The engineered surfactin was created by combining domains of genes from a bacterium and a fungus. The derived fusion proteins, under control of a promoter, were expressed in E. coli. ...
