PDTI (Santa Barbara, Calif.) received two $100,000 Phase I SBIR grants from the National Eye Institute to fund studies of photodynamic therapy to treat neovascular eye diseases and glaucoma.
Neovascular diseases include advanced diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, which cause abnormal blood vessels to form and hemorrhage. PDTI said that preclinical studies have shown that photodynamic therapy may provide an alternative to lasers for destroying the abnormal vessels while sparing normal tissues and vessels. ...
