Hextend: Post-marketing study data

Researchers at the University of Miami Ryder Trauma Center reported data from a prospective trial in 1,714 hemodynamically unstable trauma patients showing that standard of care fluid resuscitation plus 500-1,000 mL Hextend significantly reduced overall mortality vs. standard of care fluid resuscitation alone (5.2% vs. 8.9%, p=0.0035). However, a significantly greater proportion of patients receiving Hextend required admission to the ICU (41% vs. 35%, p=0.0334), as well as transfusions of blood (34% vs. 20%, p=0.0014) and plasma (21% vs. 12%, p=0.0251) vs. standard of care fluid resuscitation alone.
