Australia debates gene patents

An Australian Senate committee recommended increasing requirements for patenting genes but recommended against amending existing legislation to prohibit such patents. In a report published last month, the committee rejected reasoning by IP Australia that genetic information isolated from its naturally occurring state may be classed as an invention. However, the committee said conflicting evidence on the effectiveness of prohibiting gene patents and potential "unforeseen consequences" led it to recommend against the prohibition of gene patents. ...
