Cidofovir topical gel data

Researchers presented data from a placebo-controlled, double-blind, dose-escalation Phase I/II study in Canada of cidofovir topical gel in immunocompetent patients. A total of 96 patients received either one application of cidofovir at 1, 3 or 5 percent, or placebo gel.
Treatment at each strength significantly decreased the duration of HSV shedding as determined by cultures of the genital lesions. Days to negative culture was 3.04 for placebo versus 1.3 for all cidofovir patients (p=0.0001). Treatment also was associated with evidence of more rapid healing (5 days for placebo versus 4.22 days for all cidofovir groups, not powered to be significant).Delayed healing at the 5 percent dose was seen in some patients. ...
