IBD patients with severe refractory anemia who were given oral iron and recombinant erythropoietin experienced a rise in hemoglobin levels, compared to those given iron supplements alone, according to a report by university researchers in The New England Journal of Medicine.
A total of 34 patients were randomized in a prospective, double-blind 12 week trial to receive either oral iron at 100mg/day and subcutaneous EPO at 150 U/kg twice per week, or oral iron and placebo. The primary end point was an increase in hemoglobin levels of >1g/dcl. ...
