Preliminary analysis showed that patients receiving the 1.2 g dose experienced a 15 percent reduction in LDL cholesterol. Those taking 3.6 g experienced a 29 percent reduction in LDL cholesterol and a 23 percent reduction in total cholesterol. Patients on placebo had no meaningful change in LDL levels. CholestaGel was not associated with any dose-limiting side effects.
The results exceeded GELX's goal of showing that CholestaGel is 4-5 times more potent than cholestyramine, a commonly prescribed, non-absorbed cholesterol-lowering agent, GELX said. ...
