Results from a 10-year study of 181 HIV-infected patients demonstrated that viral load, rather than CD4 count, is a better predictor of how rapidly HIV-infected individuals will progress to AIDS, as well as of their rate of survival.

The study, presented by University of Pittsburgh scientists at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Washington, is the largest AIDS outcome analysis of viral load measurements to date. ...
