CHIR and Ortho settled litigation against Abbott in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, which alleged infringement of CHIR's U.S. Patent No. 5,156,949. The patent relates to the use of recombinant HIV envelope antigens in immunoassays.

Under the settlement, CHIR and Ortho granted Abbott a worldwide royalty-bearing license to sell HIV immunoassay tests under the '949 patent, related U.S. patents and foreign equivalents.
