Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory researchers and collaborators confirmed the cancer promoting role of p16, a cell cycle inhibitor gene known to be critical in cell division. They also found that introducing the ras oncogene into mouse cells stimulated tumor growth in cells lacking p16, but not in those with the functioning gene. Results were published in Cell.
The locus encoding p16, called INK4a, is mutated in many tumor-derived cell lines. Researchers developed INK4a-deficient mice, which develop spontaneous tumors at an early age and are highly carcinogen-sensitive, which confirms the role of p16 as a tumor suppressor. ...
