April 1, 1996 8:00 AM UTC

In a study of 188 patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy scheduled for coronary artery bypass surgery, MRE's imaging agent was used to determine the likelihood of positive outcome in left ventricular function following surgery. The study was completed by 138 patients, in whom the mean ejection fraction was 33.4±12.5 percent prior to surgery, and 36.5±12.9 percent following surgery (p<0.001). An ejection fraction improvement of >10 units was seen in 16.8 percent and > 5 units in 29.6 percent of patients following surgery.

As presented at the American College of Cardiology meeting in Orlando, Fla., initial analysis of IPPA images showed that IPPA-viable myocardium was 75 percent accurate in predicting ejection fraction improvements ³10 percent. ...
