Army researchers published findings with weakened Shigella bacteria showing the ability to direct cells to make functional foreign protein.

As reported in Science, the vector was created as a deletion mutation in the asd gene that codes for an essential enzyme for a constituent of the bacteria's cell wall. The construct strain was able to express, in mammalian cells, the eukaryotic vector pCMVbeta, and E. coli galactosidase under control of a cytomegalovirus promoter. ...
