Citing unsatisfactory Flavr Savr tomato yields, CGNE said it will not continue to grow the fruit in the Southeast region of the U.S. in its fiscal year 1996 (ending June 30, 1997). As a result, CGNE said the supply of the genetically engineered tomatoes will be "significantly less" then that of the prior year. CGNE, which will continue to produce and pack Flavr Savr tomatoes in its Irvine, Calif., facility, declined to forecast Flavr Savr production for fiscal 1996.

CGNE said it will transfer its Immokalee, Fla., packing operations for regular vine-ripened tomatoes to Gargiulo L.P. Monsanto, which is acquiring a 49.9 percent equity interest in CGNE, is transferring Gargiulo to CGNE as part of the deal (see BioCentury Extra June 29). ...
