University researchers published findings with the hedgehog protein, a mammalian counterpart to developmental signaling molecules discovered in fruit flies, showing selective guidance of neural development.
In Nature, Harvard scientists showed that recombinant hedgehog, applied to neural tissue in vitro, caused undifferentiated cells to specialize as motor neurons. And in Cell, researchers at Columbia and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute described how hedgehog acts in different concentrations to direct formation of different types of neural cells. ...
