DNXX (Raritan, N.J.) published the design and properties of its transgenic mouse expressing both the human gene for the cholesteryl ester transfer protein, which lowers HDL cholesterol, and the gene for human apolipoprotein B, which raises LDL cholesterol.

The mice, when fed a normal diet, have a ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol of 2 to 1, similar to that of humans. Previous attempts to create mouse models, traditional or transgenic, that mimic the human ratio have failed, the company noted in its report in the Journal of Lipid Research. ...
