The Menlo Park, Calif., company and university collaborators reported in Science that telomerase is active in 98 of 100 immortal cell lines, and in 90 of 101 samples of malignant tumors representing 12 different cancer types.

The study used improved assay methods over those reported in April 1994, which found the enzyme in ovarian cancer. The new assay is a PCR-based test, increasing 10,000-fold the ability to detect the enzyme's activity. ...
