The South San Francisco company published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry data on the specificity and stability of its protease enzyme inhibitors. The agents, which are vinyl sulfones, are activated only by their protease targets. The target cysteine proteases, called cathepsins, are implicated in arthritis and osteoporosis.
Preliminary animal data suggest the cathepsin inhibitors reduce the tissue destruction and the inflammation in arthritis. The inhibitors are chemically stable and unreactive in the absence of specific, targeted proteases, Khepri said. ...
