The Cambridge, Mass., company published its cloning of the human enzyme that may enable papilloma virus to cause tumors. The viral protein E6 is altered by the enzyme, and is then able to start a metabolic cascade that inactivates a tumor suppressor, p53.
The company has defined the biochemical pathway of p53 inactivation, and showed, as reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, that blocking steps in the pathway can stop the degradation of p53 that is initiated by E6. ...
