ALTN (Ramsey, N.J.) reported at the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons in Chicago that the compound, formerly known as aminoguanidine, can lessen the severity of stroke in an animal model.
Using tissue staining to determine the amount of brain tissue killed by temporary deprivation of blood flow, the company demonstrated that the drug increased the amount of viable tissue. Pimagedine prevented the AGE-mediated increase in stroke size (p<0.05), and acted alone to decrease infarct size to one-sixth of that seen in controls (p<0.05), even when given after the artery occlusion. ...
