GILD (Foster City, Calif.) published data from monkeys showing that pretreatment with the agent 48 hours before inoculation with SIV protected 83 percent of the macaques given 20 mg/kg/day, and only 50 percent of those given 10 mg/kg/day.

Only two of 12 animals given the higher dose showed infection, while three of the six given the lower dose were virus-positive. Measures used included SIV in blood, SIV DNA in monocytes, and SIV antibodies. Dosing continued for both groups for 28 days after the SIV inoculation. ...
