Elanex said it has received patents for its EPO in over 15 countries, including the European Patent Office. The product is produced using baby hamster kidney cells (BHK) under a process invented by Dr. Jerry Powell while at the University of Washington Hospital and School of Medicine. Elanex said it holds exclusive, worldwide rights to the technology.

The company has conducted Phase III trials in 829 patients in six European countries, according to Gregory Barker, director of international operations. He said the trials "were not head-to-head against any other EPO, nor were they double-blind placebo." He added that "a protocol has been established for head-to-head clinical trials in Europe, but no further information is available for release at this time." ...
