MEDI (Gaithersburg, Md.) reported that a single intranasal vaccination with the recombinant vaccine in mice gave a protective, systemic IgG response that lasted more than a year, and a sustained secretory IgA response disseminated throughout the mucosal immune system.

As reported in Nature, the mice were given the B. burgdorferi antigen as a model of mucosal induction. B. burgdorferi does not infect through the mucosa, but the demonstration shows complete protection against systemic infection by the native organism. ...
