tPA antigen concentrations were measured at baseline in plasma samples taken from 231 apparently healthy male physicians enrolled in the Physicians' Health Study who later had heart attacks. tPA antigen concentrations were also measured in 231 controls matched for age and smoking who remained free of cardiovascular disease during a 5-year follow-up.

In matched-pair analyses, baseline concentrations of tPA antigen were higher in cases of myocardial infarction than controls (p=0.03) and strongly associated with risk of future MI. The relative risk of developing a first MI ranged from 1.0 in the lowest 20 percent to 2.81 in the highest 20 percent (p for trend = 0.0008). ...
