Although there were nine reported cases compared to an expected incidence of 10 cases, the authors said the critical factor was the temporal relationship between exposure to collagen and disease. The interval from collagen exposure to diagnosis averaged 6.4 months, compared to an expected average of 25.5 months in the time period studied if there was no relationship between disease and collagen treatment.

In a critique accompanying the article, Marc Hochberg criticized the authors for including patients tested but not treated among the reported cases, but excluding them from the total number of patients exposed to collagen, thereby exaggerating the incidence of DM/PM. He also noted that no evidence of a biologically plausible role for collagen in the development of DM/PM has been established. ...
