UCSF researchers have created a vaccine using the poliovirus that produces an immune response to two proteins from HIV in immunized animals. The response has yet to be shown to prevent disease.
As published in Science, poliovirus chimeras were made by cloning sequences from various viral genes into the wild poliovirus or its Sabin derivative, a weakened form. Targets selected for testing included the Nef and Gag genes from HIV, non-envelope sequences that do not vary much among strains. ...
