The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded a five-year, $6.1 million grant to a consortium that includes the University of California at San Francisco, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and SyStemix Inc. (STMX). The grant will fund five gene therapy approaches to treat sickle cell anemia. All the programs are in preclinical development.

The UCSF program will develop a method to target retrovirus vectors to stem cells by attaching stem cell factor to the retrovirus. University researchers will also use liposomes to develop both ex vivo and in vivo gene therapies. ...
