MYCO (San Diego) filed for EPA approval of its seed for corn hybrids that are genetically engineered to produce a protein that protects corn from European corn borers. The gene responsible for corn borer resistance is a synthetic copy of those produced by Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).
MYCO already has test-marketed corn hybrids, developed through traditional breeding, with natural resistance to the first generation of corn borers, which strike in the early season. Bt-based resistance will provide a second control that will protect corn plants throughout the season. ...
